My voice is gruff, I’ve soaked through four outfits, and my tastebuds have taken a vacation. What is that strange concoction people are always raving about here in China? Ah yes! Boiled Coca-Cola, ginger, and lemon. I’ll tell you right now, I’m not a believer. I’ve just rang my husband with this tall order just so I can test how tall this tale may be.

Call me a cynic, but I think Coca-Cola may have invented this myth in the same way they invented Santa Claus.

My mother always fixed me a ginger and lemon tea sweetened with honey. Doesn’t this cocktail sound more promising without caffeine and all else that rots teeth and stomach lining? Perhaps anyone with a scientific explanation might be able to hypothesize. Why is this drink supposed to work?

In the meantime, I’ll fix myself this drink and hope to not change into another dry set of clothing.

5 Responses to Ginger Cola, remedy or hoax?

  1. I’ve seen this concoction on menus at various HK-style cafes across the Canadian prairies throughout my childhood. Never ordered it once, but worked with Chinese chefs to swear by it.

So did it work? Although I do not wish to get sick to find out, it would certainly be a great remedy if it does. Please advise and thanks for sharing.

Hands down, this concoction is tasty. I can see how this might be easy to serve to children and can’t understand why it isn’t served on menus next to Shirley Temples and Roy Rogers.

Without a scientific explanation, I can’t swear by it. However, after a cup and a half of this elixir my voice was less hoarse, I continued to sweat, and the fog in my head persisted. My sleep was undisturbed and I awoke this morning with a slight headache but feeling better at 75%.

This morning I am sipping a different hot concoction: ginger, lemon, honey, and a cinnamon stick.

just had this drink a couple of weeks ago in San Fran .. to help tame a cough. When i was studying in HK, the locals taught me to drink hot coca cola with lemon to soothe sore throats and reduce phlegm. They told me that cola syrup is similar to what cough syrup is made of. A quick check in google seems to have some basis to this.
